Small cattle farm in middle Georgia grows with help from UGA SBDC

What Joseph Egloff began in 2011 as a “little hobby” is now a full-time cattle ranch and meat packing plant serving customers across the East Coast.

As his business grew, he turned to the SBDC for help. Since 2017, sales have increased 20%. But Egloff could improve by reducing the time and cost to get cattle to the nearest processing plant. With help from the SBDC, Egloff successfully obtained an SBA loan to build his own processor.

“With the facility, I get to support other small cattle farmers and that makes me feel like I’ve done something worthwhile. But I did not build this thing by myself. I knew in my mind that this could work, but I didn't know how to make it work. We got a lot of help and I'm so grateful to my consultant."

[Due to COVID-19] Our customers had to shut their mills down and demand was falling. My consultant suggested I pursue DoD emergency needs — our fiber is used in filtration. Two new customers came through this channel. Her advice kept us running.

Athens ice cream shop keeps scooping with support from SBDC

When he was 7, Beau Shell asked for an ice cream cart for his birthday and began selling at events. In June 2019, when he was 15, he had saved enough money to open Cool World Ice Cream Shop. After a summer peak, they experienced cash flow problems and worried the business wouldn't survive. Beau and his mother Vickie turned to the UGA SBDC for help. Their consultant David helped them establish a business plan and financial organization. Throughout the pandemic, he worked with the Shells on new cash flow strategies and emergency loan funding. “A whole lot of miracles got us to where we are now,” said Vickie. “David and the SBDC did a lot of work that we couldn’t. We’re about 85% back. COVID took a whole year from us, but we'll be back."

Like most small businesses, we’re usually drinking out of the fire hose. The UGA SBDC is free and the consultants are individuals with a wealth of experience. That was a godsend for us at the time we needed it.
