The AK SBDC's TREND program has been a game changer. It provided my company with the opportunity to secure a Phase I SBIR award from the EPA, bringing $100,000 to Alaska and setting the stage for more funding in the future.

EnKoat Develops Sustainable Solutions to Decarbonize Buildings
EnKoat's proprietary thermal storage technology, (termed Active Insulation™) helps keep buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Their first product is an easy to apply exterior coating that helps utility companies save millions of dollars in equipment failure, by reducing internal operating temperatures of their substation and switchgear enclosures. Over the last several years Maricopa SBDC Counselor Lou Farina worked with the client on grant applications and pitch competitions. This led to winning an SBIR phase I grant from the National Science Foundation, a Wells Fargo sponsored grant from the U.S. Department of Energy as well as an award from ASU’s Venture Devil Pitch Competition, which totaled almost $750K in startup capital.

SIEV Technologies Wins SBIR Funding on First Try
SIEV Technologies of Fayetteville won a $256,000 National Science Foundation SBIR grant for a technology that turns corn fibers left over from the ethanol manufacturing process into material for making more ethanol. SIEV's innovation is reusable and environmentally friendly while existing means of converting the leftover fibers to useable material are either expensive, inefficient, or have environmental drawbacks. Helping SIEV succeed on its first SBIR attempt, ASBTDC innovation consultants "were invaluable throughout the whole SBIR application process," said CEO Davar Sasongko. SIEV is an example of ASBTDC's efforts to increase the number of Arkansas SBIR applicants and winners through its FAST-supported activities.

Tech Company Eco Focused Is Dedicated to Addressing the Problem of Food Waste in Landfills
Eco Focused CEO Jacqueline Gilyard Jones developed a prototype for a greentech product that required university collaboration to refine its design. She came to the SBDC for help accessing funding. In the words of Jones, "The SBDC assigned me an advisor to help and support me through the process of applying for an SBIR grant. She was able to provide not only technical advice but also grant application advice. And that's what I personally needed — to have both — to accomplish my goal."
