Your Guiding Light

RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Firewater Public House

Danny and McCall Burau had a dream to relocate to Saratoga, WY and start a restaurant where customers could have a relaxed culinary experience in an enjoyable atmosphere. The two purchased an existing restaurant, made several major renovations, and met with the Wyoming SBDC Network to realize their vision. As Firewater Public House now celebrates four years in business, the Buraus say their business has been thriving — even during the COVID-19 pandemic. During a recent visit, Wyoming SBDC Network Regional Director Jim Drever says their biggest problem is that there is not enough seating for the many patrons.

"Business has been incredible, maybe even scary since it’s ‘COVID times’, but we're having our best year since we opened," said Danny.

MILLENNIALS + GEN-Z

Felicia Jane Pilates

Felicia Messimer has been working with the Wyoming SBDC Network since she first began thinking of renting space and equipment to start a small, part-time Pilates business. When clientele started to grow, she reached back out to her advisor who helped look at pricing and financial projections to purchase her own equipment. Felicia’s studio has grown and she is now at the point where she is making a decision whether to turn her former side hustle into a full-time job.

VETERANS

Sticking with the Family Business

As a retired U.S. Navy veteran and the son of a gunsmith, Mike Miller knew exactly what to do when he decided to work for himself. There’s no room for error with Mike and Spartan Precision Gunsmithing. When manufacturing his custom bolt-action rifles, he deals with tolerances of about .0005 of an inch. To obtain a business loan for the necessary equipment, Mike worked with the Wyoming SBDC Network to develop an in-depth business plan and financial projections. Spartan Precision Gunsmithing now boasts equipment from metalworking machinery to a laser engraver. Mike’s shop is currently growing to accommodate the new advanced equipment and has dedicated areas for polymer pistol frame customization, Cerakote application, and gun bluing.

WOMEN-OWNED

Turning a Passion Into a Start-Up

Last spring, Dr. Angie O’Hearn decided to start a mobile veterinary practice because she felt there was a compelling need in Casper community for this service. She most frequently works with dogs and cats. One important service that she performs is palliative care and in-home euthanasia. Dr. Angie makes the end of the journey a less stressful experience for both the pet and the owner. Angie first contacted the Wyoming Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Network to inquire about legal requirements to start her own business. That conversation expanded, and her local advisor helped her create a business plan, which resulted in a start-up bank loan. She also received valuable QuickBooks assistance.
