Multi-Generational Dairy Business Goes Modern

Seth Bahler is owner of Oak Ridge Dairy and Modern Milkman. Oak Ridge Dairy is a 5th generation farm, started in 1890 by Bahler's great-great grandfather. Wanting to hedge against that and recognizing the business potential of an online subscription service, they launched Modern Milkman in 2019.

CTSBDC Advisor Shelly Koehler provided advising with budgeting, marketing and connecting the business to resources at CTSBDC host university, UConn. The marketing research provided insight into their competition, their growth strategies and activities in the marketplace.

With a pilot subscription-based service in other regions of the country and plans to convert methane produced on the farm to energy, Seth is definitely focusing on the future.

Florida

Estuary Oysters Navigates Uncharted Waters with Help from the Florida SBDC at FAMU

Keith [Florida SBDC consultant] listened and helped us find funding to initiate the company, hazard relief after Hurricane Michael wiped us out, support money through this COVID pandemic and further funding for potential growth into 2021 and beyond. Because of Keith, we are expanding our workforce, improving our environment, and helping to resurrect this coastal community with sustainable jobs for generations to come. Obviously, I can't say enough about Keith and his team. The past, present, and future would be impossible without him!

Georgia

Small cattle farm in middle Georgia grows with help from UGA SBDC

What Joseph Egloff began in 2011 as a “little hobby” is now a full-time cattle ranch and meat packing plant serving customers across the East Coast.

As his business grew, he turned to the SBDC for help. Since 2017, sales have increased 20%. But Egloff could improve by reducing the time and cost to get cattle to the nearest processing plant. With help from the SBDC, Egloff successfully obtained an SBA loan to build his own processor.

“With the facility, I get to support other small cattle farmers and that makes me feel like I’ve done something worthwhile. But I did not build this thing by myself. I knew in my mind that this could work, but I didn't know how to make it work. We got a lot of help and I'm so grateful to my consultant."

Hawai'i

Hamakua Coast Premium Develops New Products with Hawaiʻi SBDC Assistance

As long-time bartenders in Hawaiʻi, Charles Jury and Brandon Ventura were dissatisfied with the quality of basic, but crucial, cocktail ingredients, so they developed a process to make syrups from local produce, including Macadamia nuts, lilikoʻi (passion fruit) and ube (purple yam). Hawaiʻi SBDC advisor Dennis Boyd worked with them to scale up production, source ingredients, refine their business plan, and to locate a funding source to finance their now successful business.
